About this service

uPVC and composite doors use a multipoint locking system with several bolts and hooks that lock into the frame. When it wears, drops out of line or the gearbox fails, the handle can become stiff, floppy or stop working altogether.

Leaving the problem often makes it worse – a lock that is hard to operate can fail completely, leaving you locked in or out. A repair or gearbox replacement is far cheaper than a new door.

While we're there, we can upgrade the cylinder to an anti-snap model, which stops the most common way burglars attack uPVC doors.

Useful advice

Questions

Why is my uPVC handle hard to lift?

It's often the door dropping out of line or a worn gearbox. Leaving it can cause the lock to fail completely, so it's worth getting it looked at.

Can you fix a uPVC door that won't lock?

In most cases yes – by adjusting the door, replacing the keep plates or fitting a new gearbox or multipoint lock.

Do I need a whole new door?

Rarely. Most uPVC lock problems are fixed by repairing or replacing the lock mechanism.

"Had someone available to sort the lock out within the timeframe specified and the price was notified up front, the locksmith texted to confirm appointment and arrived when he said he would after confirming our address. Problem was solved in a reasonable amount of time and I paid what I was quoted when I telephoned."
